We suffer a huge loss with the passing of Raúl Álvarez Garín. Álvarez Garín was a key figure in the 1968 student movement as well as in post-1968 activism to sustain a memory of what Álvarez Garín describes as a “genocide” (that is, the Dirty War against Mexican activists that, some would argue, persists today). Álvarez Garín was a key organizer in the Comité 68 and author of La Estela de Tlatelolco.
During one of my dissertation research trips in 2012, Raúl was exceedingly generous. He shared a collection of books published by the Comité on the 40th anniversary of 1968, and he sat for a lengthy, meandering interview.
This photo was taken by Ana Ignacia Rodríguez Márquez, La Nacha, herself a key figure in 1968 and activism in the decades since. When Nacha and I last saw each other in June in Mexico City, Raúl and his health were central to our thoughts.
Rest in peace, Raúl. You are missed.
