Ohio Wesleyan University is a selective, private, undergraduate liberal arts, residential institution founded in 1842 and is located just 20 miles north of Columbus.
The Department of Geology and Geography at Ohio Wesleyan University invites applications for a one-year, part-time position (starting August, 2016), carrying the title of ‘Visiting Assistant Professor’ in the area of Human Geography. The successful candidate will hold a PhD or be near completion of the degree (ABD) in Geography or related discipline at the time of appointment and will demonstrate experience teaching courses in human geography. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 3 courses during the fall semester and 2 during the spring semester. The courses to be instructed in the fall include two sections of Cultural Geography and one upper-level in Economic Geography. In the spring, the candidate will elect to teach two courses from among the following: Cultural Geography, Urban Geography, Latin American Geography, or another Regional Course in Geography.
Candidates will be evaluated in terms of their broad training across sub-disciplines in Human Geography, and their alignment with department teaching needs. The successful candidate will demonstrate aptitude for undergraduate teaching. The search will favor candidates with demonstrable expertise in Cultural Geography. The Department also welcomes applicants who have a track record of public engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Department has five full-time, tenure-track faculty, three in Geology and two in Geography. This is a one-year position that compensates $5000 per course taught. The position does entitle the successful candidate to health benefits, and members of the Department will provide some measure of financial support to attend regional and national conferences in Geography. The Department prides itself on its focus on teaching and student mentorship. Geography majors and minors at OWU benefit from training across the breadth of the discipline.
